The mountains around Elm tell a much clearer story after a visit to the village’s old schoolhouse. Now home to the visitor center for the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona, it uses models, games, hands-on displays and experiments to show families how the Alps were formed.
Why are ancient rock layers sitting above much younger ones? And what immense forces shaped the mountains? At seven interactive stations, families explore the entire Tectonic Arena through a 3D model, try out geological tools, take a closer look at the Martin’s Hole and browse the reading corner for ideas for their next outing. Children can race down the Martin’s Hole slide and test their aim with the toss game. Along the way, visitors of all ages discover what makes the Tectonic Arena and geological features such as the Glarus Thrust so remarkable. After traveling through millions of years of Earth’s history, families step outside ready to spot the lines and rock layers in the mountains around Elm for themselves.
