Zürich
Via Natura Hiking Trail
How wild is Zurich? Families find out on Via Natura, where 25 hiking routes wind through marshlands, floodplains, lakes and forests to five nature centers across the canton.
- 235-km circular hiking route through the canton of Zurich
- 5 stages with a total of 25 routes
- 5 nature centers
- Marshlands, floodplains, lakes, ravines and forests
- Lookout towers, boardwalks and waterfalls
- Information panels on different habitats
- Audio trails with Hiky
A lookout tower rising above the reeds, a boardwalk across the marsh, a thundering waterfall and a forest where fallen trees are left exactly where they land: Via Natura gives families a close-up look at the many sides of Zurich’s natural landscape. At Neeracherried, binoculars sweep from bird to bird. At Tüfels Chilen, bizarre tufa formations steal the show, while the Rhine, Sihl and Thur reveal a constantly changing world along the water’s edge. Where is the crayfish hiding? Who can spot signs of a beaver? And what does a forest look like after decades of being left to its own devices?
The 235-kilometer loop, created by Zürcher Wanderwege, links five nature centers and a wide range of habitats. Its five main stages are divided into 25 shorter hikes, each beginning and ending near public transportation. That makes it easy for families to choose a route that fits their interests, energy levels and available time.
Along the way, information panels point out what is growing, living and changing right beside the trail. On selected audio trails, kids join Hiky on a puzzle-solving mission. And if curiosity is still running high at the end of the hike, each nature center offers a deeper dive into the local plants and wildlife.
