Lake Lauerz flashes through the reeds on one side while marshy meadows stretch out on the other. It makes for an easy start to the ride. Families follow the mostly flat shoreline route and, after just under three kilometers, reach the ferry for Schwanau Island. Anyone in the mood for a detour can leave the bikes behind and hop across to explore the castle ruins and chapel or settle in for a meal at the island restaurant.

Back on the mainland, summer riders do not have to wait long for a swim. At the free Lauerz swimming area, families pull out towels and swimsuits, fire up one of the grills or grab a snack from the lakeside stand. From there, the route heads into the Sägel wetlands, where reed beds, floodplain and open water create plenty of chances to spot waterbirds. A pair of binoculars is worth having in the bike bag. At Camping Buchenhof, younger riders can take a break on the playground before everyone pedals on to Choli for one last swim. Bikes go down in the grass, shoes come off and the family heads back into Lake Lauerz before riding the final stretch to the starting point.
