Perched on the eastern edge of the Meilemer Tobel at 540m above sea level, the ruins of Friedberg Castle still offer a glimpse of what once stood here. Families can wander among the old walls, trace the moat and two former gateways and spot the foundations of a cellar and the castle well. Built around 1200, this hillside fortress was probably one of the largest castles on the northern shore of Lake Zurich. Excavations have turned up some fascinating finds, including copper kettles, leather shoes, wooden tableware and even a wooden horn. The castle lives on today in Meilen’s coat of arms.

The ruins are easy to combine with a walk through the Meilen Gorge, while the Pfannenstiel Trail passes right by. Hungry history hunters can grill their own sausages at the public BBQ or stop at the neighboring Wirtschaft zur Burg, set in the old estate, for seasonal and regional cooking.

Tip: The permanent “Friedberg Castle” exhibition at the “Ortsmuseum Meilen” displays original finds and tells the story of life at the castle. Kids can even dress up as its former residents.
