What did Schellenberg Castle look like in the Middle Ages? What did people eat 7,000 years ago? Can you imagine Liechtenstein buried beneath a thick sheet of ice? And what was life like for children a century ago? On the Wurz and Zirp themed trail in Schellenberg, families uncover the answers – not in a museum, but out in nature.

This interactive five-kilometre loop winds through forests and across meadows, at times tracing the border with Austria. Along the way, six hands-on stations bring Liechtenstein’s past to life. At Schellenberg Castle, children peer through a magical telescope for a glimpse of the Middle Ages. Later, they step inside a wooden hut to discover how the first farmers lived and stand beside a giant boulder left behind by the Ice Age. There’s a game that explains how Liechtenstein became a principality, a playground and photo spot with Wurz, Zirp and their friends – and a giant memory game to round things off. Afterwards, it’s back to the start – unless the playground tempts you to stay a little longer.
