A kingfisher perched on a bent reed, a great crested grebe gliding past the water lilies? From the birdwatching hide at Silberweide Nature Station, families can watch the birds without disturbing them. A one-kilometer nature trail winds through the wetlands around the visitor center, passing flower meadows, hedgerows and ponds. Along the way to the stork nests, the trail follows the beaver path, where kids can look for signs left behind by these nocturnal residents. Want a closer look? Families can borrow binoculars at the visitor center and scan the wetlands for dragonflies, frogs and other wildlife.
There’s more to discover closer the nature station. The barefoot trail takes kids over wood chips, pebbles and mud, while the adventure playground invites them to climb, balance, splash around and dam up water. Inside the station, the nature lab and other hands-on exhibits explore different aspects of the local environment. Families can then grab a bite at the bistro or fire up the grill at the picnic area. Guided tours, workshops and special events take place throughout the year.
