Alp Mettmen in Freiberg Kärpf

Families hike through the beautiful wildlife reserve, admire animals in the wild and enjoy nature at its best.

  • Europe’s oldest wildlife reserve
  • Wildlife observation points
  • Circular path Mettmensee
  • Climbing garden Widerstein
  • Kärpf bridge
  • Day trip
  • Multi-day hike
  • Sleep in huts
  • Arrival by Kies-Mettmen cable car

Already upon the arrival by cable car, families can spot chamois with a little luck. Once arrived at the top, visitors step into the magical world of Europe’s oldest wildlife reserve.

On the scenic walk through nature, animal spotters big and small open their eyes wide, listen super carefully, and observe ibex, chamois, and deer in their daily routines. Marmots, eagles, black grouse, and many other animals, too, share their home in this beautiful place. There are three public wildlife observation points where families can see the animals from a vantage point.

Another wonder of nature is Kärpf bridge: The natural bridge with its underground brook has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
