Vaduz with Kids: Ideas for a Family Day Out
Mini golf, royal treasures and a detective trail: we spent a day exploring Vaduz with the kids and found plenty to keep the whole family busy.
Did you know that a Liechtenstein flag traveled to the moon in 1969 and later returned to Earth together with a piece of moon rock? And that you can see that very rock in Liechtenstein’s Treasure Chamber? More on that later.
Our family day out in the principality started with a train ride to Sargans, followed by the PostBus to Vaduz. Many of you probably know Vaduz mainly as the place where you change buses on the way to Malbun. This time, though, we weren’t heading to Liechtenstein to ski or hike. We wanted to find out what there is to do in Vaduz with kids.
Our first stop was the Liechtenstein Center, a handy place to pick up ideas for the day and browse a few souvenirs. Our stuffed-animal collection has since gained a new member: the marmot “Prince Stupsi of Liechtenstein.”
Mini Golf, Pizza & a Swim
We hopped on the local bus to the Schaan-Vaduz mini golf course. None of us are particularly talented and usually at least one family member suffers a minor meltdown along the way, but we love mini golf all the same. The 18-hole course even hosts international competitions. Our family is a very long way from that level, but we had a great time anyway. The pizza at the restaurant next door is also in a league of its own. There’s no standard pizza menu: you simply tick off the toppings you want and a little while later your custom-made pizza arrives at the table. Fun, easy and seriously good.
If the weather cooperates, cross the road afterward and you’ll find a fantastic outdoor pool with several water slides.
All That Glitters
A real royal family needs a real treasure collection. Liechtenstein certainly has one. Our highlights in the Treasure Chamber were the impressive collection of Fabergé eggs and, of course, that genuine piece of moon rock.
Vaduz has several other museums worth visiting too. We especially liked the Liechtenstein NationalMuseum, where we followed the region’s history from the Stone Age to the present day and explored a large exhibition on local wildlife.
If you still have time, stop by the PostalMuseum as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the KunstMuseum this time.
Detective Trail: Following Clues Through Vaduz
If you want to explore beyond Vaduz’s main pedestrian area, pick up the materials for the Vaduz Detective Trail at the Liechtenstein Center.
Together with Dominik the badger, families follow clues scattered around the city. You’ll need to pay attention: some of the puzzles are surprisingly tricky and the clues can be well hidden. We searched for numbers on manhole covers and inspected the towers of Vaduz Castle very closely. The trail takes around two hours and leads through parts of the city you might otherwise miss. There’s a playground along the route too and plenty of opportunity to stop for an ice cream before catching the bus back to Sargans.
So next time you’re passing through on your way to Malbun, consider stopping in Vaduz for the day.
