A family visit to Baden’s Spa Fountains

Baden, a treasure trove of family-focused activities. We discovered child-friendly open-air baths, the historical museum and plenty of lovely cafes.

Despite being just 16 minutes from Zurich by train, this was our first trip to Baden. Initially, thinking the city was more adult-focused, thanks to its reputation for outstanding thermal spas, we were happy to discover plenty of family-friendly activities.

From waffle-filled cafes, outdoor thermal fountains (where kids are more than welcome), scooter-friendly river walks, and a historical museum that welcomes families, there is a lot to explore!

But first Breakfast
We began our visit with a stroll to find the all-important coffee for the parents and something sweet for the kids! So we were happy to stumble upon the Bela Loko cafe on our way.

Thanks to the rainy day, we nabbed a covered table outside (but if you want to follow suit, I highly recommend making a reservation) and settled in for some coffee, hot chocolate and waffles. The kids went sweet – choosing waffles topped with maple syrup, with us parents’ more mature palate preferring the cheese waffles topped with avocado and a poached egg.

Swimming in a Fountain
With tummies full, we wandered towards the main reason for our visit – the “Heisse Brunnen“. The idea of thermal water fountains in the middle of the city was something I had to see to believe.

Despite the drizzle, our eight-year-old couldn’t wait to jump into the water. Following the bathing rules, she washed off with the (very) cold hose and slowly waded into the 38c warm thermal water. Like a cosy blanket, the water temperature was perfect for the cold rainy October day.

These outdoor public thermal fountains opened in late 2021 thanks to a local group of thermal bathing fans. Wanting to bring back the tradition of public bathing, not seen in the wellness city for over 150 years. The group succeeded, building two locations, one on either side of the river Limmat, behind the more adult-focused FORTYSEVEN Spa.

Walking Along the Limmat
After drying off, it was time to wander back into town, this time along the Limmat river. Known as the Limmatpromenade, the walk takes you under chestnut trees and is ideal for a scooter or gentle walk. Perfect after a soak in the thermal springs.

Lunch Option in Baden

With our tummies rumbling again, it was time to search for lunch. Luckily the end of the promenade lands you conveniently into the old town, filled with quaint shops, restaurants, and cafes.

While we ended up at the local Italian restaurant, where our picky eaters filled up on pizzas and gnocchi, next time, especially on a girls’ trip, I will be sure to reserve at “Frau Meise”, a quaint cafe/boutique serving brunch also on weekdays. Or, if the sun shines, the outdoor riverside “Triebguet Frischluftbar” (opened in the warmer months) with their play corner.

Dive Deep into History

After lunch, we ventured over the wooden bridge to visit Baden’s historical museum. What a surprise! Every single room had an interactive element that captured our kids’ attention.

From dressing like knights to creating a family crest, our kids had fun while learning about Baden’s history. Our eight-year-old loved the dress-up rooms filled with vintage costumes, taking photos we emailed back home.

Before you Leave
After a long day, it was time to go home. But not before a visit to a local bakery to taste the Baden specialty, “Spanischbrödli”. This light, sweet, crispy pastry treat is not only delicious, but its name also inspired the first train line between Baden and Zürich to be affectionately known as the “Spanischbrödlibahn”.

The train line transported the dessert, eaten ideally fresh, to Zürich in just 45 minutes. A fun fact we picked up at the historical museum.
