If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise… because here is a protected beech forest where no trees have been felled since the year 2000. Giant specimens and their decaying counterparts, nestled in a jungle-like thicket of ferns and shrubs, make an incredible habitat for rare insects and fungi in Wilderness Park Zurich Sihlwald – and children dive right into nature.
So let’s get exploring! Little ones measure trees, seeing if they can jump further than woodland animals, and go barefoot on the two-kilometer, interactive Forest Adventure Trail. There’s a nature-themed playground and everyone’s eyes widen at the sight of otters through the viewing window in the enclosure. Get your bearings at the visitor center’s interactive Sihlwald exhibition and for more wildlife, head to the Wilderness Park Langenberg, Switzerland’s oldest animal park.
Getting to Sihlwald is easy: hop on the train or cycle the 16-kilometer trail along the river Sihl from Zurich main station.
