Thurauen Nature Center

From the canalized and diverted river to its diverse floodplain, the revitalized Thurauen offers a rich habitat for protected species and relaxation for nature-lovers.

  • Signposted hiking trails
  • Boat trips possible
  • Exhibition on the nature region

Whether hiking the signposted trails or taking a boat trip, the Thurauen nature center offers visitors firsthand experience of a natural paradise on land and water.

Floodplains such as Thurauen are shaped by water: the rising river floods the meadows and forests, and forms gravel banks and islands. When the water level drops again, it leaves behind puddles, pools and important nutrients for the soil, creating a diverse habitat for countless animal and plant species. Dragonflies, waterfowl and beavers share the floodplain with salamanders, frogs and water scorpions. Thirty different species of orchid also thrive in Thurauen, while gentians blossom in the fall.

The Thurauen nature center is the ideal place for visitors interested in learning more about the recultivation of flood meadows. An exhibition and experience trail tell the story of a river that can once again follow its natural course.
