130 metres above the floor of the Sernftal valley hides a gateway to a magical world. Tunnels lead directly into the Landesplattenberg Engi, a disused slate mine that once made many a livelihood possible in the barren Glarus mountains. For centuries, people mined “black gold” here and exported it all over the world. With pickaxe and hammer, they created huge rock cathedrals and pointed arches and brought valuable fossils to light.
Today, guided tours for visitors aged 14 and above provide a vivid picture of their achievements and leave everyone marvelling. The experience is complemented by a visit to the last slate factory in the village of Elm, which has been converted into a museum and showcases the processing of the slate.
