In the heart of Zurich’s Old Town, a fascinating treasure is tucked behind the facade of an old townhouse on Neumarkt: a free-to-visit historic 3D city model at a scale of 1:500. At Haus zum Rech, families lean over “Zurich around 1800,” a miniature city measuring 4.80 by 4.20 meters, and search for familiar places along the Limmat. But the city looks surprisingly different. Medieval walls and towers are still standing, Baroque star-shaped fortifications encircle the city center and even long-vanished monasteries and Fraumünster Abbey are still there. At the interactive media station, kids and adults can follow individual buildings and places from the 18th century to the present day.
The roughly 800-year-old townhouse also tells a story of its own. Flanked by two medieval residential towers, it is now home to Zurich’s Architectural History Archive and City Archives. Families can explore the publicly accessible courtyard and learn more about archaeological discoveries and Zurich’s architectural and urban history through changing exhibitions.
