Polybahn

The Polybahn is one of Zurich's true icons. For more than 135 years, the little red funicular has carried passengers from Central to Polyterrasse in just 100 seconds.

Central Polybahn
  • In service since 1889
  • Connects Central and Polyterrasse
  • Trains every 2–5 minutes
  • Ride time: 100 seconds
  • Open front section for the best ride
  • Historic drive mechanism on display beneath a glass floor

One hundred seconds can be surprisingly exciting. As soon as the bright red Polybahn pulls away from Central, the noise and bustle of downtown Zurich begin to fade. Grab a spot at the front of the open car for the best experience as the funicular climbs the hillside. At the top, your first discovery is waiting beneath your feet: a glass floor reveals the original drive mechanism that once powered the railway. Just a few steps away, Polyterrasse offers one of the city’s finest views, stretching across Zurich’s Old Town to the lake beyond. Continue on to the University of Zurich’s Natural History Museum, where dinosaurs, Ice Age discoveries and fascinating exhibits bring the natural world to life.

Operating since 1889, the Polybahn links Central with Polyterrasse and has become one of Zurich’s best-loved landmarks. Students rely on it as the quickest route to ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, while families enjoy it as a fun and memorable way to explore the city. Up to two million passengers ride the “Student Express” each year. Trains run every two to five minutes and carry up to 50 passengers per trip.
