How does a lump of clay become a brick? At the Brickworks Museum near Cham, families find out with their own hands. Inside the only fully preserved historic brickworks in German-speaking Switzerland, kids follow the process from shaping and drying the clay to firing the finished bricks. On selected Sundays, they can head into the open clay workshop to create pieces of their own, which can even be fired later if they wish.
Outside, there’s plenty more to explore. Families can spot decorated historic bricks, peer up at the nine-meter kiln tower and wander out toward the fen habitat created by former clay excavation. At the “Zwergenwerkplatz”, kids experiment, build and get stuck in, while the little brickworks railway trundles along its tracks and a boardwalk leads out into the wetland. Between activities, families can fire up the barbecue or stop by the Ziegler-Beizli. By the end of the visit, kids haven’t just learned how bricks were once made — they’ve touched, shaped and worked the clay themselves.
