How far is it to Mars? And why does Jupiter seem so incredibly far away? Along the Planet Trail from Effretikon to Kyburg Castle, these questions suddenly become much easier to understand. The planets are positioned using the same relative sizes and distances as in our real solar system. As families hike the trail at four to five times the speed of light, they gradually gain a sense of the vast scale of our universe.
The adventure begins at Effretikon train station, where a 1.5-meter-wide model of the Sun marks the starting point. From there, space enthusiasts follow the blue trail markers past Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Just when it feels like half the journey is behind you, Jupiter is still a long way off. That’s exactly what makes the trail so fascinating – it brings the enormous distances between the planets into perspective.
The 8.5 km hike climbs about 150 meters before reaching the medieval Kyburg Castle. Picnic areas along the trail and the cozy “Besenbeiz” Sternschnuppe in Ottikon are perfect for a break before catching the bus back to Effretikon.
