Helmet on, hands gripping the wheel – then it’s go time. At the Morschach go-kart track, a simple family outing quickly becomes a race day to remember. Kids aged eight and up (and at least 130 cm tall) can take the wheel themselves, and it rarely takes long for parents to swap the pit lane for the driver’s seat. The 18 electric karts are zippy but quiet, so cheers and laughter echo across the circuit.
After a few laps, the conversations turn tactical. Where do you shave off those last seconds? Who’s nailed the racing line? And how did little brother overtake Dad on the straight? Speed is only part of the game—concentration, smooth cornering and a knack for the track count just as much. Budding drivers can hone their skills at the summer karting school, picking up tips from the pros.
Set high above Lake Lucerne at Swiss Holiday Park, the 300-metre track is open whenever the weather’s dry spring to autumn. Come evening, the Sunset Drive transforms the circuit: from 7 p.m., floodlights flicker on and every lap is a dash under the stars.
