“Goldapfel” Gingerbread Bakery & Museum

At the Schafbock- und Lebkuchenmuseum in Einsiedeln, visitors immediately embark on a journey back in time. For the nostalgia-steeped store, the Goldapfel, has been restored so that it looks exactly as it did back in the days when countless pilgrims traveled to Einsiedeln and its monastery. Already then, visitors enjoyed the popular pilgrim’s confectionery on sale at the Goldapfel – and these mouth-watering specialties are still available today. In addition to Lebkuchen (gingerbread), they include the so-called “Schafbock”, which is made from a sweet honey-flavored cookie dough, but unlike the gingerbread is not filled.

This age-old company has been producing these tasty treats since 1850. Anyone who would like to find out more about the traditional craft of cookie baking can browse through the adjoining museum to their heart’s content. The museum not only tells the story of these Einsiedeln specialties, but also exhibits numerous objects, such as machines, documents and baking utensils from the time around the turn of the 20th century.
