From hikes and a nature trail on the moor to a Kneipp path – in this idyllic nature reserve, families can encounter animals in their natural habitat.

Mettmen
  • Europe’s oldest wildlife reserve
  • Wildlife observation points
  • Circular path Mettmensee
  • Nature trail on the moor and Kneipp wellness path
  • Climbing garden Widerstein
  • Kärpf bridge
  • Day trip, multi-day hike
  • Sleep in huts
  • Arrival by Kies-Mettmen cable car

With a little bit of luck, it might be possible to spot a chamois or two on the way up in the cable car. On reaching the top after the short ride, visitors are greeted by the sight of the oldest nature reserve in Europe.

It‘s a good idea to pay attention during a hike through the breathtaking natural surroundings here, as it’s possible to see ibex, chamois, deer, and many other animals going about their daily lives. The three nature observation points are the best place to get a bird’s eye view of the local wildlife. The moor nature trail is located near the “Naturfründehuus” mountain inn. This short circular route (1 km / 0.62 miles) leads visitors across the high moor on a boardwalk, while offering the chance to learn all about this marshy area’s flora and fauna from fascinating information boards. After a long day of walking, the Kneipp path provides the perfect way to give tired feet a treat. Here, visitors can take off their walking boots and socks and walk barefoot over stones, wood, and moss.

Kärpf bridge is another wonder of nature: this natural bridge with its underground brook has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
