Toot toot… all aboard the S10 Sihltal-Zürich-Uetliberg-Bahn. In 27 minutes, this cherry red train glides you away from Zurich main station to the bucolic heights of Uetliberg. At 871 meters, the local mountain offers the widest panoramas around – across the city and lake to the Alps – as well as a varied day out in nature for families.
At the station, Uetliberg Playground is brilliant for little legs to burn off excess energy, and if anyone’s hungry, family-friendly Bergstube Restaurant is here too for a leisurely breakfast or lunch. A 10-minute walk away, 178 steps climb the observation tower at Uto Kulm viewpoint (best for older kids). Alternatively, you can head for the Uetliberg Bike Trail or join family hiking trails like the stroller-friendly two-hour Planet Trail. Along the way, count the planet models, which are distanced to scale, and look out for shaded grill spots. At Felsenegg, retrace your steps or descend via cablecar to Adliswil. Visit Uetliberg in fall to get above the fog or sledge down the Uetliberg Toboggan Run near the mountain station in winter.
