Uetliberg
Tobogganing on the Uetliberg
The favorite toboggan run of the local residents is located not far from the city on Zurich’s home mountain, the Uetliberg.
- 3.1km (2 miles) long
- 330 vertical meters (1,400ft)
- Easy to challenging
- Food & refreshments nearby
- Service phone number for slope conditions
Route
The start of the run is just a few steps from the final stop of the SZU railway at the top of the Uetliberg. The first few feet are relatively gentle, but the run should not be underestimated, as it quickly becomes steeper and faster. Passing through woodland and surrounded by beautiful scenery, it wends its way down into the Triemli quarter of the city, where public transportation is available. The route is at its best when it snows and every sound is absorbed into the stillness. For safety reasons, the toboggan slope at the Ringlikon station is recommended for families with small children.
Toboggan Hire
Toboggans can be hired for CHF 20 per day and CHF 200 depot at the restaurant Gmüetliberg. They are very popular, especially at the weekend, so it is worth getting hold of one beforehand or borrowing one from a friend.
Catering Facilities Nearby
The Gmüetliberg restaurant and Maiensäss in the Hotel Uto Kulm both serve fondue. Culinary treats also await visitors at the bottom of the run in the Hide & Seek restaurant and at Ecco in the Atlantis by Giardino hotel.
Special Remarks
Hired toboggans must be returned to the summit station after use. A service phone number (+41 44 412 14 71) gives information on the condition of the slopes, as there is no guarantee of snow in Zurich.
The brave-hearted can also try their hand at night tobogganing on Uetliberg: Equipped with head or pocket flashlights, adventurous tobogganers take to the slopes at their own risk and coast back down into the city.
