High above the Rhine Valley sit the ruins of Neu- and Alt-Schellenberg, two enchanting castle sites that spark the imagination of young adventurers and seasoned history buffs alike. The well-marked “Historic Ridge Trail” winds through sun-dappled forests and blooming meadows to the Upper Castle (Neu-Schellenberg), once a proud hilltop fortress with a keep and thick stone walls. Today, it invites visitors to explore, marvel, picnic, and even grill — and now and then, it becomes a dramatic stage for events like the “Heerlager” or the “Princely Liechtenstein Tattoo.”
A short walk away, the smaller Lower Castle (Alt-Schellenberg) hides among the trees, once a fortified outpost, now a mysterious treasure trove for imaginative explorers. Admission is free and the Middle Ages truly feel just a stone’s throw away.
