Where nature, art and gastronomy meet
What's the best way to enjoy the widest range of experiences in the shortest possible time? That's easy: with a two-day trip around the regions of Winterthur and Zurich.
For our two-day trip around the Winterthur and Zurich regions, we left our car at home and headed off on an adventure via public transport.
We started in Zurich’s wine country, where we went for a hike through nature accompanied by reindeer. After this unique experience, we refuelled in the child-friendly Kafi Rauke café in Winterthur before making our way to the Gewerbemuseum. After an informative and engaging museum visit, we strolled along the Marktgasse to Restaurant Sporrer, before heading to bed at Hostel Depot 195, satisfied after a day full of new experiences.
In the morning, we woke up feeling refreshed and ready to hop on the S-Bahn towards Zurich, where MyClimate Audio Adventure helped us learn all about the city and how to protect the climate in a fun way. To round off our trip in style, we made our way to Restaurant Kornsilo and the Mühlerama museum in Zurich’s Tiefenbrunnen mill. Before we enjoyed a tour of the mill, we ground some flour ourselves and used it to make our own bread – a golden brown, delicious-smelling treat and the perfect end to a fun-packed weekend!

Reindeer trekking: a walk that will light up children's eyes
At the Mühlebachhof in Dachsen, Salomé Fürst and her reindeer led us on a nature walk. Together with Santa’s hardworking assistants, we discovered Zurich’s wine country and enjoyed the perfect start to a weekend full of adventure.
Kafi Rauke: a child-friendly café with eclectic retro style
After our trek, we were ready for some refreshments at Kafi Rauke in Winterthur. The café’s sustainable charm delighted us parents, while our children loved spending time in the play corner. The tasty snacks and delicious lunch menu ensured we enjoyed a moment of shared happiness.
The Gewerbemuseum: two museums under one roof
Once we had refuelled, we set off on our next adventure: the Gewerbemuseum in central Winterthur. After a fascinating tour of the exhibition, where we learned to look at everyday objects and artworks in a whole new way, we had the chance to get creative ourselves in the “Material Laboratory”.
Restaurant Sporrer: Gourmet Dining on the City's Edge
After strolling along the Marktgasse, we took the bus towards the outskirts of the city to Restaurant Sporrer, where the friendly staff immediately showed us that families are welcome here. We enjoyed beautifully presented seasonal dishes in a cosy atmosphere before heading back to our hostel.
Depot 195: a hostel in the former industrial quarter
This urban hotel reflects the district’s industrial character. The historic building has been renovated and now offers spacious, well-equipped rooms, a kitchen and a welcoming common room – the perfect family accommodation for our weekend stay.
Explore Zurich: MyClimate Audio Adventure
After a good night’s sleep, we hopped on the train to Zurich, where we discovered the world of the Zurich Central Station lizard. The Audio Adventure led us through Zurich’s districts, parks and squares, while we learned fun and interesting facts about how we can help protect the climate.
Kornsilo: a friendly local eatery
After the informative and interesting tour, we visited Café Kornsilo in the Tiefenbrunnen mill. The homely, welcoming café forms the village square of the buzzing culture district and was our destination for a delicious lunch.
Mühlerama: from grain to bread
The old mill has been transformed into a museum. While we admired the mill technology, our children had the chance to grind grain into flour and use it to make their own bread. As a final highlight, they loved sliding down the wooden slide on flour sacks.
Two Days, Two Worlds: Adventures Between Weinland, Winterthur, and Zurich
During our two-day trip to the regions of Winterthur and Zurich, we explored all kinds of different worlds. Our adventure began with a walk with some animal companions through Zurich’s wine country and then took us to Winterthur. Here, we got to know the city and its many facets and enjoyed great food, culture and a stroll through the streets. After a good night’s sleep at Hostel Depot 195, we got on the train to Zurich, where the Central Station lizard took us on an exciting and educational tour. As the perfect culmination to our trip we visited the Tiefenbrunnen mill and enjoyed the many activities on offer there.
