When it comes to winter sports, there are some things we all agree on, and others that are a little more contentious. We’re all united in thinking there’s almost nothing better than snowy adventures, but we don’t quite see eye to eye on the best way to spend a day in the snow. Our 7-year-old loves cable cars and wants to spend the whole day (and ideally the night, too) skiing. The 6-year-old doesn’t like slopes that are too steep, but does want plenty of action. The 3-year-old likes to spend 20 minutes skiing on the magic carpet ski lift, then wants to go sledding instead. My wife and I also like winter hikes and taking in the view. In short, it’s a bit complicated. Fortunately, we’ve found a solution: the Flumserberg winter sports resort.
20 minutes to a winter wonderland
Even the journey is a delight. I’ve rarely experienced a ski resort where simply getting there is such a wonderful experience. The train Aare Linth from the Südostbahn stops in Unterterzen by Lake Walen. After a short walk through the underpass, we arrive in front of the imposing SeeJet cable car. In just 20 minutes, the eight-seater gondola transports us from the springlike valley station into a winter wonderland. The journey takes in views of the Churfirsten mountain range, the Glarus Alps, and Lake Walen, and is simply spectacular.
On the slopes
We arrive at the top and find ourselves surrounded by glorious white scenery – something that was almost unimaginable down at the bottom. Thanks to this exciting gondola ride, our 7-year-old son can already cross something off his wishlist. To make sure everyone else also gets the most out of the trip, we split into two groups. I make my way to the ski resort with the two older children. We discover the HäxäWäldli adventure slope, where the wild ride down the narrow piste through the forest is so thrilling that the boys shout for joy – and, of course, laugh their heads off when I almost fall over in a little hollow.
After that, the boys want even more action, so we head to the Prodkamm. The SnowPark for freestyle tricks is still a little too challenging for my kids. But on the CrossPiste and the FamilyRun (giant slalom), we race each other, hurtle over the moguls, take on the banked turns, and now and again there’s even a small ski jump for us to try. After all this action, the 6-year-old is beaming too.
Meanwhile, my wife and our youngest child are taking it a little bit easier. With their skis packed in their bags, they take a bobsled from Tannenboden along the beautiful winter hiking trail that runs to Prodalp via Chrüz. They reach their destination in 45 minutes. On Prodalp, the magic carpet ski lift awaits, and our 3-year-old tackles a few rounds before hunger strikes.
Food is something we all agree on
Just like the ski resort as a whole, Restaurant Prodalp is everything we could wish for and also has plenty of space. The children demolish their pizzas and we enjoy the breathtaking views from the generously proportioned terrace. It’s pretty awesome that a family with such a wide range of requirements and preferences is able to spend a day in this ski resort in a way that makes everyone happy.
Tobogganing, hiking, skiing
After we’ve eaten, we split up again. My wife toboggans down to Tannenheim with the 3-year-old. It works well with the two of them. It’s worth noting that the slope has a lot of moguls, so small children should be accompanied by an adult in their toboggan. Afterwards, they walk and sled from Prodalp back to Tannenboden via Chrüz.
We three skiers are still enjoying our day. Now it’s my turn to pick what we do: the trail from Maschgenkamm to Seebenalp. In my opinion, this 20-minute descent is one of the most wonderful experiences in any Swiss ski resort. I soak it all up: the frozen lake in front of me, the mountain inn behind me and the Churfirsten mountain range as a backdrop – it’s indescribably beautiful. The day is coming to an end, and our energy is starting to run out. It’s time for the final highlight: we take the SeeJet gondola back down to Lake Walen, leaving the winter wonderland behind us up above. The memory of this fantastic day will stay with us all for a long time.
A journey through the universe
The only item we still haven’t crossed off our aforementioned wishlist is night skiing, which is on offer every Friday evening and on selected Saturday evenings, when the easy Chrüz ski run is transformed into the Flumserberg Galaxie. On these evenings, you can set off on a galactic journey in the snow with the stars twinkling in the sky. The trail starts at the valley station, which is transformed into a spaceport for the night. From here, you float past three shooting stars to the space station. On the Chrüz piste, you travel through the glittering Milky Way, past a radiant moon and toward the shining lights – a beautiful and otherworldly experience.
