On a discovery tour in Baden and Zurich
Get up and go? That’s easy said and done in “Kinderregion” – even with teenagers. You don't have to reinvent the wheel to turn those frowns upside down, as our weekend in Baden and Zurich revealed.
A trip – two cities
A city tour, a hike and a visit to a wildlife park make for a great weekend – even with teenagers. What better way to lure the kids away from “Fortnite” than with a crime thriller? The “Crime Trail Baden” showed new sides of the city as we investigated motives and searched for evidence.
No detective skills were required for the next activity, but our leisurely hike up the Uetliberg was just as rewarding. The breathtaking views culminated in an instagram-perfect sunset over Zurich and an overnight stay at the summit hotel under the stars.
The first day was a hard act to follow, but Zurich’s Sihlwald Wilderness Park was up to the task. Where humankind once ruled, nature now reigns, making a visit to the museum and wildlife park a fascinating and enlightening experience for all ages. The icing on the cake for our teenagers was free travel on public transport to and from both locations with the Zurich Card. A relaxed lunch with a view of the brown bear enclosure rounded off the weekend in style. Not a frown in sight.
Crime Trail Baden: Murder of a real estate manager
Seek and ye shall find – detective skills were required as we investigated the death of Barbara Gloor. In the end, we did not only unmask the murderer but also rediscovered Baden with its beautiful Ruin Stein, hot fountains and picturesque old town. Afterwards we satisfied our hunger in the beautiful Stadtgarten in Baden. After lunch, we took the train towards Zurich main station.
Uetliberg: Bird's eye view over the city
Happy hikers – of course, we could have simply boarded the Uetlibergbahn at Zurich main station. But the hike up from Triemli was infinitely more rewarding and offered breathtaking views of the city and beyond. It even inspired the kids to climb up the observation tower for a bit of an extra thrill at the end. Another insider tip: the ComicTrail and the Planet Trail is a great activity for younger children.
Restaurant Uto Kulm: Enchanting Evenings
Maybe it was the fresh air, the exercise or the view, but dinner at the Uto Kulm restaurant was particularly delicious – even if it was still a little too chilly to enjoy the breathtaking view from the panoramic terrace. We could only imagine how great a Sunday brunch there must be at the height of summer.
Hotel Uto Kulm: A feast for the eyes
A completely different treat awaited us, as we said goodbye to the last day trippers to the Uetliberg that night and checked into our room at the Uto Kulm summit hotel. The stars twinkled above us. Below us, the city shimmered at our feet.
The next day, the Zurich Card was the answer to our teenagers’ tired feet. We leaned back in comfortable chairs as we traveled on to the Sihlwald Wilderness Park.
Nature Museum Wilderness Park: Interactive journey into nature
The second day, the Zurich Card was the answer to our teenagers’ tired feet. We leaned back in comfortable chairs as we traveled on to the Sihlwald Wilderness Park. Wilderness and wild animals inspire all ages and Zurich’s Sihlwald offers both in abundance. After the once intensive cultivation was discontinued over 20 years ago, nature has returned and transformed the forest. A visit to the Nature Museum provided an informative introduction.
Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park: The wilderness on your doorstep
Window into the wild – in the Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park the “predator trail” offered a true adventure, taking us to native and formerly native animals such as bears, wolves, lynxes and wildcats as well as right into the heart of the Zurich Wilderness Park.
Restaurant Langenberg: a real bear-strong lunch with a view
A relaxed visit to the self-service restaurant rounded off our weekend in style. Over a delicious lunch and a large portion of ice cream, we watched the brown bears dozing in the sun in their enclosure – just as happy as we were. And so ended a family weekend out that was enjoyable for everyone.
Happy teenagers, happy parents
The weekend full of adventures and nature experiences in Baden and Zurich provided our family with exciting challenges and relaxing moments. The mix of activity and relaxation made the two-day trip an unforgettable experience that also delighted older kids and teenagers.
